art quilt collection: hidden animals

Thirty-six righteous people are hidden in the world, according to mystical Judaism, so we must treat everyone as if they and we might be one. Perhaps thirty-six animals are hidden to guide us, with the responsibility to protect them all. In Hebrew numerology, eighteen is an auspicious number, written with letters, also spelling “chai” or life – each of these quilts features a multiple of eighteen. Even while remaining attentive to the details of each animal's existence, the pixelation here suggests that one can perceive and perhaps appreciate them only from a distance.
